Yesterday we visited the famous Tier Garten here in Berlin. This is huge site just west of the center of Berlin, you can easily get to it just by walking through the city or by taking any of the many forms of transportation around the city. This huge piece of land which, stretches a few kilometers and is about 3/4 of a kilometer wide, is thickly settled by the ever growing beautiful trees which are protected by the state. After the heavy bombings of WWII, this land was excluded from all the rebuilding done to ensure that in time Berlin would again have a beautiful landscape. There are many small ravines running through the Garden but there is one central one that can be seen mostly from the west side and south side. Bike paths and walking paths run through the entire forest but there are small foot trails, like the one seen in the second picture, running through the Garden. This is 100% a place that you need to visit if you ever find yourself in Berlin, even if you are only there for a few days.
The most prominent part of the Garden though has got to be the Siegessäule (Victory Tower) almost directly in the middle of the park. This tower was designed and build by the Nazis during the time Hitler was in Power, it was moved to this specific spot as part of Hitlers plan to completely redesign Berlin on a North-South, East-West axis. This was one of only 2 structures that were actually moved according to his plan, the growing war slowed and ultimately stopped his plans of redesigning the city. Plans were stopped up until his reign of tyranny ended in 1945 with his death, and were then ultimately nullified.
Well that's all for this post/history lesson, thanks for reading!
PS. the scroll arrow for the pictures is a little hard to see, make sure you use it to see all of the pictures though!
